Hi Dr. Athirah, I’m in my late 30s and recently had to remove a tooth, which has got me thinking about getting a dental implant to replace it. I’ve heard from friends that it’s important to replace a missing tooth, not just for the appearance but also for overall health, like preventing other teeth from shifting and maintaining jaw structure. I guess I’m worried about what might happen if I don’t do anything about it. Can you please share why it’s so important to get an implant instead of leaving the gap? Thanks a lot!

Hi there, and thanks for reaching out! This is a common concern, and it’s great that you’re considering your options. When you lose a tooth, it’s not just about aesthetics. Your other teeth can start shifting into that space. This movement can create misalignment, which might make chewing difficult and can even lead to cavities or gum disease because your bite isn’t balanced. By placing an implant, you help keep your neighboring teeth right where they should be.

Another important aspect is maintaining your jaw structure. Every time you chew, the roots of your teeth stimulate your jawbone. Without a tooth, there’s no root for stimulation, and the bone can begin to weaken or shrink. Over time, this could alter the shape of your face. An implant works like a new root and helps to keep your jawbone strong and healthy.

Thinking ahead, replacing a missing tooth with an implant has long-term health benefits. When a gap is left unattended, it can lead to complications like bite changes, which sometimes cause jaw pain or headaches. An implant is an investment in your oral health, preventing potential issues down the line.

You might be curious about what the treatment entails. Typically, your dentist will place a titanium post in your jawbone. This will naturally fuse with the bone over a few months, giving you a sturdy base similar to a real tooth. Your dentist will guide you through the process, ensuring you know what to expect and end up with a tooth that functions as naturally as possible.

It’s always best to address these matters sooner rather than later. Delaying treatment could lead to more severe dental problems and possibly higher costs. I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with your dentist to explore your options, so you can ensure a happy and healthy smile going forward!
