Hi Dr Toof! I hope you’re doing well. I’m curious about who is a good candidate for braces because my 12-year-old son is starting to get some crooked teeth, and I want to know if he should consider getting braces soon. I remember getting braces when I was in school, and it made a big difference for my smile, so I want the same for him if it’s needed. Can you share some tips on what signs to look for to know if he should see an orthodontist? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. It’s wonderful that you’re looking out for your son’s dental health. If his teeth are starting to get crooked, there are a few signs you can watch for. If you notice his teeth are crowded, overlapping, or sticking out more than usual, that’s a good hint he might benefit from seeing an orthodontist. Also, if he’s having trouble chewing or biting into food, those could be clues pointing to potential alignment issues.

The causes for crooked teeth can be a mix of things. Genetics play a big role, so if you or your partner needed braces in the past, it’s more likely he might need them too. Besides, habits like thumb-sucking or using a pacifier for too long when he was younger can also influence how teeth line up.

Should your son need braces, he’ll see an orthodontist who will suggest the best type tailored for him, whether they are metal, ceramic, or even invisible braces. They’ll set up a treatment plan, which generally takes around 1 to 3 years. But don’t worry, the orthodontist will explain everything and find what’s best for him.

While you’re waiting for that orthodontist appointment, keep up with his dental hygiene. Make sure he’s brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. Healthy teeth and gums are crucial and will help any future orthodontic treatment be more successful.

Finally, it’s a great idea to schedule an orthodontist visit sooner than later. Early intervention can sometimes make treatment easier and yield better results, helping him achieve the bright, confident smile that every child deserves!
