Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’ve been having this problem with chronic bad breath for quite some time now, and it’s really been affecting my confidence when I’m talking to people. I’ve tried brushing my teeth more often and using mouthwash, but it doesn’t seem to help much. Can a dentist treat chronic bad breath, and if so, what should I do next? Thanks so much for your help!

Hello there! Thanks so much for reaching out. Chronic bad breath, or halitosis as it’s known, can really be a confidence buster, so you’re not alone in wanting to fix it. Sometimes the root cause is simple, like poor oral hygiene leading to plaque buildup. Plaque is that sticky stuff that forms on your teeth if you’re not brushing and flossing properly, and it can lead to bad breath.

But there are also other causes to consider. Some foods we love, like garlic and onions, are notorious for leaving a lasting smell. If you’re a smoker, that can also make bad breath worse. In some cases, it could be health-related issues like gum disease or dry mouth. These conditions reduce the saliva in your mouth, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.

So, what can a dentist do to help? A lot, actually! Dentists can provide professional cleanings to remove plaque and treat any gum disease or cavities that might be causing the odor. It’s always a good idea to visit your dentist regularly, as they can spot these issues before they become bigger problems.

In the meantime, there are some things you can try at home to manage the smell. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. This actually helps increase your saliva production, which is good news for your breath! Chewing sugar-free gum can also stimulate saliva and help wash away those pesky food particles.

Most importantly, do see a dentist as soon as you can. They’ll help you identify any serious issues and offer personalized treatment. Getting to the root of the problem can do wonders for your confidence and overall oral health. Hope that helps, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have more questions!
