Hi Dr. Toof! I hope you’re doing well. I’m a parent with a teenage kid who’s been asking about getting braces for his crooked teeth. However, I’ve heard that not everyone can get braces, and I’m really curious about who might be excluded from getting them. I want to make sure my son can have the best smile possible, but I’m worried he might have some issues that could prevent him from getting braces. Could you please explain who can’t get braces and why? Your advice would really help me understand this better! Thanks a lot!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out and asking such an important question. When it comes to getting braces, there are indeed some situations where a person might not be able to jump right into orthodontic treatment. Let’s explore this in a bit more detail.

First off, if there are any serious dental health issues like gum disease or tooth decay, these conditions need to be tackled before even thinking about braces. You see, braces require a healthy foundation to work efficiently. On the other hand, certain jaw issues such as an overbite or underbite might demand surgical intervention before braces can be considered.

Don’t worry, though, because a professional solution is available. A dentist will do a thorough examination, including X-rays, to take a close look at the overall dental health and the structure of the jaw. If they spot any decay or gum disease, they will work on treating those problems first. In instances of significant jaw issues, an orthodontist might suggest surgery as the best step forward before starting with braces.

In the meantime, while your child’s dental health is being assessed, maintaining good oral hygiene is key. Encouraging your teen to brush twice a day and floss daily can do wonders. Also, try to minimize sugary snacks and drinks as these can lead to further dental issues that might delay the process of getting braces.

So, it’s crucial to consult with a dentist soon to get a proper evaluation of your child’s dental health. An early assessment can highlight any problems that need addressing before braces can become a reality. Taking these steps now will surely pave the way for a healthier and straighter smile for your child in the future. Cheers and all the best!
