Hi Dr. Athirah! I hope you’re doing well. I’m curious about dental veneers and whether they actually protect teeth from cavities. I’ve had a couple of fillings done in the past, and at 35, I want to make sure my teeth stay healthy as I get older. I’ve heard that veneers can improve the look of teeth, but I’m concerned about whether they can also provide some protection against decay. Could you please share your thoughts on this? Thanks so much!

Hello there! Thanks so much for reaching out and I’m glad you’re thinking about ways to keep your smile healthy and vibrant. Let’s dive right into dental veneers and what they can do. Veneers are essentially thin shells that get placed on the front surface of your teeth. They can work wonders for sprucing up your smile, making them a popular choice for many people looking to cover up imperfections. However, it’s important to know that while they beautify your smile, veneers don’t actually shield your teeth from cavities.

Bacteria in your mouth can still cause cavities by producing acids that break down your tooth enamel. If you have veneers, it doesn’t mean your teeth are immune to this process. The underlying teeth can still be prone to decay. This is often due to factors like poor oral hygiene or indulging in sugary foods and drinks, which many Malaysians enjoy, like teh tarik or kuih-muih. Even if you have veneers, practicing good dental habits remains crucial to prevent those pesky cavities.

If you suspect that a cavity is developing, visiting your dentist is a step you’ll want to take promptly. They can check things out properly and recommend treatments like fillings or, in more serious cases, perhaps an extraction or root canal. Regular dental check-ups are key to catching any issues early and keeping your teeth in great shape, veneers or no veneers.

To maintain optimal oral health, brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily are non-negotiables you want to keep up with. This helps protect not just your teeth overall, but even those with veneers. Using mouthwash can aid here, and fluoride toothpaste is a fantastic choice since it helps to keep tooth decay at bay. Watching out for too many sweets or sugary drinks is something small you can do that makes a big difference—less sugar equals less risk.

Remember, regular visits to your dentist are essential, especially as we get older and past dental work like fillings might need monitoring. Your dentist can give you advice tailored specifically to your needs and help ensure your smile doesn’t just look good but is also healthy. So go ahead and make that appointment—you deserve to love your smile!
