Can a Toothache Go Away on Its Own?

Hello Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a mother of a 12-year-old who recently had a toothache that seemed to come and go. It got me wondering if a toothache can actually go away on its own or if that usually means there’s an underlying problem. I’ve had my share of dental issues before, and I remember some pain that faded over time, so I’m curious if that’s typical for kids too. I want to make sure my child doesn’t face any serious dental issues later on, and any advice you have about toothaches in children would really help me understand this better. Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out with your question, and I hope your little one’s doing okay! When it comes to toothaches, they often signal that there’s something going on beneath the surface, like tooth decay, gum disease, or even a dental abscess. The tricky part with toothaches is that sometimes the pain can come and go, which might make it seem like the issue’s gone away. But really, it’s important to address it, especially in children whose teeth and gums are still developing, to prevent any big problems later.

The on-and-off nature of your child’s toothache might suggest there’s an infection or a cavity that’s just starting to brew. It’s not bad enough yet to cause constant pain, but definitely something you want to keep an eye on. Other possible causes could be something like teeth grinding at night or maybe food getting stuck between the teeth, which can easily irritate the gums.

While you’re getting ready to see the dentist, you can help your child manage the discomfort at home. A simple rinse with warm salt water can work wonders for easing inflammation and can be quite soothing. Also, if it’s suitable for your child’s age and weight, a little bit of paracetamol can provide temporary relief. But remember, these are just short-term solutions.

It’s super important to schedule a trip to the dentist, even if your child says the pain has gone away. A professional can provide a full check-up to catch any issues early on and suggest the right treatment like fillings or cleans. This step can make a huge difference in preventing more serious dental issues down the road.

Lastly, untreated toothaches can lead to bigger complications like infections, tooth loss, or misaligned adult teeth. By establishing a routine dental check-up every six months, you’ll not only keep your child’s teeth in tip-top shape but also set them up with good dental habits for life. Regular check-ups are like a little insurance policy for a healthy smile!
