Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 45-year-old dad, and I’ve recently started wearing dentures. I’ve noticed that I’m really unsure about when to clean them properly. Should I clean them after every meal, or is it enough to do it once a day? I’ve heard that keeping them clean is super important, but I want to make sure I’m doing it right to avoid any problems. Your advice would mean a lot, especially since I’m trying to set a good example for my 12-year-old son. Thanks!

Hey there! It’s great to hear you’re taking such a proactive approach to your dental health, especially since you’re setting an example for your son. When it comes to cleaning dentures, it’s all about consistency. Ideally, you’d want to clean them after every meal. I know it sounds like a lot, but it really helps keep those food particles from sticking around and causing bad breath or even infections.

However, if cleaning after every meal feels overwhelming, aim for at least once a day. This is a must-do to avoid plaque and tartar build-up, which can lead to gum irritation, infections, or even affect how well the dentures fit. Believe me, keeping them clean will save you from lots of discomfort while eating or speaking!

In the meantime, make it a habit to rinse your dentures after meals. Use a soft brush designed for dentures, skip the toothpaste because it can scratch the dentures. Stick with a special denture cleaner or just mild soap for a gentle clean. It’s a quick way to maintain them until you have time for a thorough clean.

Don’t forget to visit your dentist regularly. They can professionally clean your dentures and ensure everything is fitting well. Plus, catching any gum issues or other potential problems early is always better for your overall oral health.

By being diligent about your denture care, you are definitely showing your son the importance of keeping good dental habits. These are habits that can last a lifetime! Good job, and keep it up!
