Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I have a question about baby teeth and cavities. My son is 8 years old, and I’ve recently noticed some spots on his baby teeth that have me worried. I’ve heard different opinions about whether cavities in baby teeth are a big deal, especially since they will fall out eventually. I want to make sure I’m doing the right thing for his dental health, as I’ve read that these issues can affect adult teeth later on. Can you please share your thoughts on this? Thank you!

Hello there! Thank you for reaching out with your question, and I’m doing great, thanks for asking! Let’s talk about your concern over those spots on your son’s baby teeth. First off, even though baby teeth will eventually fall out, cavities in them shouldn’t be shrugged off. Much like adult teeth, cavities in baby teeth are caused by bacteria munching on sugars and then producing acid. This acid slowly erodes the enamel, leading to painful cavities if not treated.

Now, you might wonder why we should care about baby teeth if they’re just placeholders. Well, if a cavity in a baby tooth gets serious enough, it can cause pain or infection, and that’s definitely uncomfortable for your child. But also, baby teeth help guide the adult teeth into place. If they’re lost too early due to severe cavities, it could potentially mess with how the adult teeth come in, leading to problems with alignment or your child’s bite. So, maintaining those baby teeth is crucial until it’s their time to go.

In the meantime, while sorting out a dentist appointment, you can help keep things in check with a solid oral hygiene routine. Encouraging your son to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and getting some flossing done can really help. Try to limit sugary snacks and drinks since they’re not the teeth’s best friends. If he eats something sweet, just rinsing with water afterwards can help get rid of sugar that sticks around.

Once you see a dentist, they’ll determine if these spots are indeed cavities and suggest a treatment plan. Often, fillings are the go-to for fixing small cavities and restoring the tooth’s structure. If things are a bit more severe, a crown might be suggested. Don’t worry, the dentist will guide you through all of this and suggest the best path forward.

In short, it’s pretty important to get those spots checked out by a dentist as soon as you can. Early action can prevent bigger issues in the future, keeping both your son’s baby and adult teeth healthy and strong. Plus, it’s always better to be safe and keep that bright smile sparkling!
