Why Do People Need Braces?

Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to ask, why do people need braces? I’m in my early thirties, but my 10-year-old son has been complaining about his crooked teeth, and I’ve heard from friends that braces can really help with that. I’m curious about what benefits braces actually provide, like improving smiles and making it easier to chew or clean teeth. Also, are there any specific reasons we should consider getting them for him now instead of waiting? Thanks for your help!

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out with your question. Let’s dive into why braces might be a good idea for your son. First off, crooked teeth can happen because of a couple of reasons. Sometimes it runs in the family, like inheriting the shape of your jaw or the size of your teeth. Other times, certain childhood habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting can cause teeth to go a bit wonky.

Another common reason is something we call crowding. This is when there’s not enough space in the mouth for all the teeth to come in straight, making them overlap and creating that crooked look. It’s not just about appearances though; crowded teeth can make cleaning them a bit tricky, which could lead to other dental issues.

Braces are a fantastic solution for this. They can align teeth, improve your bite, and correct jaw positions. This not only gives a nice boost to one’s smile but also makes it easier to eat and brush one’s teeth properly. You’d be amazed how much easier it is to floss when everything’s in line!

While you’re waiting to see a dentist, it’s a good idea to ensure your son is keeping up with good oral hygiene habits. Encourage him to brush his teeth twice a day and use dental floss to keep his teeth nice and clean. It’s like giving his teeth a little TLC until they can get the care they need from braces.

Finally, visiting a dentist or orthodontist sooner rather than later is key. Getting ahead of any potential problems can make treatments more effective and might even prevent bigger issues down the road. Plus, starting early gives your son a great head start towards a healthy, confident smile as he grows. Hope this helps, and good luck with your dental journey!
