Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 45-year-old father and recently, I’ve been thinking about dentures as my dad is having some issues with his teeth. However, I’ve heard that not everyone can use dentures, and I’m curious about who is not suitable for them. Is there certain health conditions or age-related factors that would make someone a poor candidate? I want to make sure he gets the best advice since he’s been struggling with his dental health for a while. Thank you for your help!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out, and it’s great to see that you’re thinking ahead about your dad’s dental health. When it comes to dentures, there are indeed a few factors to consider to determine if they’re the right choice for someone.

First off, people with underlying health problems like advanced gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or certain heart conditions might face challenges with dentures. These health issues can make it tough for the mouth to heal and can interfere with keeping the dentures clean, which is super important for their success.

When we talk about older folks, age itself isn’t usually a barrier, but the changes that come with aging can be. For instance, things like bone loss or shifts in the jaw structure can make dentures not fit as snugly or comfortably as they should, leading to some discomfort.

Next up is oral hygiene. Dentures need a bit of tender loving care. So if someone struggles with maintaining good oral hygiene or simply isn’t motivated to care for their dentures, they might face problems down the line. Poor hygiene might lead to infections or gum issues, which is something we surely want to avoid.

Lastly, materials matter! Some people might be allergic to materials used in making dentures, which could lead to irritation or inflammation. It’s important to mention any allergies your dad might have during his dental visit. Speaking of visits, it’s a good idea to get him to a dentist who can assess his situation properly and guide you through the best path forward. In the meantime, keeping up with oral hygiene like brushing and rinsing is a fab idea to help maintain his current oral health.
