Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a mom with a 12-year-old son who is starting to show some crooked teeth, and I’m wondering when is the right age to get braces. I’ve heard that it can really help with teeth alignment and boost confidence, but I’m not sure if now is the best time or if we should wait a bit longer. I’ve seen some friends get them as early as 10 and others much later, so I’d love your advice on what age is ideal to start this process. Your guidance would really help us make the best decision for my son. Thanks!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. Great question – many parents wonder about the best time for their kids to get braces. The ideal age generally ranges from 10 to 14 years old. This is a sweet spot because many kids have a mix of adult and baby teeth, which allows the orthodontist to plan the best course of action. At this age, your son’s jawbones are still growing, making it a good time to correct any alignment issues.

Sometimes, crooked teeth are genetic, but other factors like thumb-sucking or certain habits can also play a role. Knowing the cause can help tailor the right treatment. It’s not uncommon for kids to get into the habit of chewing on random objects, which doesn’t help with straightening out that smile.

If you’re considering braces for your son now, it would be wise to see an orthodontist. They can take a look at his teeth and jaw alignment and sketch out a personalized plan. Typically, they’ll do some digital scans or X-rays to get a detailed view of what’s going on in there. Don’t worry, it’s all quite straightforward.

In the meantime, make sure your son keeps up with his oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily can prevent other issues while you sort out the braces. Keep an eye out for hard or sticky foods that might make things worse. We want to keep those teeth in the best shape possible while you prepare for his orthodontic journey.

Last but not least, it’s really important to see a dentist or orthodontist as soon as possible. The earlier, the better, because it means a shorter and simpler treatment process. Waiting too long can lead to more complicated issues and potentially higher costs. So, make that appointment soon, and you’ll be on the right path. Good luck!
