Hi Dr Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 45-year-old father of two teenage kids, and I recently got dentures. Lately, I’ve been experiencing some pain when I wear them, and I’m worried it might mean something is wrong. I’ve read that some discomfort is normal when getting used to dentures, but I want to know how to tell if the pain is a sign of a bigger issue. Can you please explain what to look out for and when I should come in for a check-up? I really appreciate your help as I want to make sure everything is okay. Thank you!

Hello there! First off, congratulations on getting your new dentures. They’re a big step towards maintaining a beautiful smile. When it comes to pain, it’s normal to feel some discomfort at first. Your mouth needs time to adjust, just like how you feel a bit odd in a new pair of shoes. But, if you’re experiencing sharp or persistent pain, or notice any swelling, it might be a sign that something isn’t quite right, like a denture that’s not fitting snugly or some irritation to your gums.

There are a few culprits that could be causing this pain. Often, it comes down to how your dentures fit. If they’re not sitting properly, they can create pressure points or rub against your gums, which isn’t very comfortable. Sometimes, our gums change shape over time, and what used to be a perfect fit might need some adjustments. Infection or other gum issues can also cause pain, so it’s good to stay alert.

In the meantime, as you prepare for a dental check, there are some home remedies you can try to ease the discomfort. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help soothe any irritation. If certain areas are particularly bothersome, applying a bit of dental wax can create a barrier and prevent that annoying rubbing. Remember though, these are just temporary fixes—you’ll still need to get a proper check-up.

Now, if the pain persists for more than a few days or if you see any redness, swelling, or sores that aren’t healing, it’s really important to book that dental appointment soon. These symptoms could be indicators of an infection or another issue that requires immediate attention. Better safe than sorry!

Lastly, don’t hesitate to visit your dentist. Your oral health is essential, and it’s always best to tackle any concerns early on. Dentists can help adjust your dentures to make them more comfortable and ensure your gums are in good shape. So, don’t worry too much, just make sure to see your dentist when things don’t feel right.
