Hi Dr. Toof, I’m a parent of a 12-year-old who’s just started wearing braces a few weeks ago, and we’re really curious about when the pain will go away. My child has been feeling quite uncomfortable, especially after adjustments, and it’s been tough seeing them struggle with eating and sleeping. I just want to know if there’s a typical timeframe for when braces stop being painful, and if there are any tips to make this process easier. It would really help us understand what to expect as we go through this journey together. Thank you!

Hello there! It’s completely understandable to be concerned about your child’s experience with braces. Generally, the discomfort your child is feeling is a normal part of the process. When braces are adjusted, they apply pressure to the teeth to help them move to the right position, and this can cause some discomfort. Typically, your child will feel sore for a few days up to a week after each adjustment. So, hang in there – it’s all part of getting that beautiful smile!

For easing the discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol or ibuprofen can be a lifesaver. A warm compress on the outside of the cheeks can also work wonders to soothe any soreness. At this time, encourage your child to enjoy soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, or a nice warm bowl of soup since they’re easier to eat when the mouth is tender.

As for the timeframe, the intense pain should reduce as your child’s mouth starts to get used to the braces, often within the first month or so. Many kids mention that they don’t feel as much pain after they pass this initial adjustment period. So, patience is definitely key here – their mouth is just getting used to their new setup.

Make sure to keep up with regular orthodontist visits. This is crucial because it ensures the braces are doing their job correctly and that there are no issues like a wire poking or any wrong adjustments. If the pain is severe or just doesn’t seem to go away, you should definitely consult with your orthodontist.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. It’s always a good idea to communicate with your orthodontist if something feels off. They can offer personalized advice and make sure everything is going as planned. Early intervention is best, so don’t hesitate to reach out if needed. All the best to you and your child on this braces journey!
