Hello there! Thanks for reaching out, and I’m doing great, hope you are too! I totally understand how your daughter feels, food is such an important part of life, especially for a 12-year-old exploring her favourite snacks! Initially, when she gets her braces, there’s about a 1-2 week adjustment period. During this time, she might feel some discomfort or soreness in her mouth. It’s completely normal and should pass. For now, keeping it soft is the way to go—think mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies! These yummy options are gentle on her teeth and will help ease her into this new braces journey.
Once that initial soreness starts to ease, your daughter can slowly start reintroducing her favourite foods. It’s best to start with softer versions of those snacks she loves. For instance, if she’s craving pizza, perhaps try a softer, thin-crust version first. Typically, she should be able to return to a more normal diet in about 4-6 weeks, but it’s really up to how comfortable she feels and how her teeth are adjusting.
It’s important to know that the discomfort comes from the braces exerting pressure on her teeth. This is how they work to align the teeth, so the soreness is a sign that the braces are doing their job! As she gets used to them, the soreness usually fades away.
In the meantime, there are a few things she can do to make herself more comfortable. Rinsing her mouth with warm salt water can be soothing, and it’s good to avoid very hot or cold foods as they might increase sensitivity. Plus, keeping up good oral hygiene is super important to prevent any plaque buildup around her braces, which can cause more discomfort.
Make sure to keep all her appointments with the orthodontist throughout her treatment. If she continues to feel significant pain or if anything doesn’t feel right with her braces, it’s best to schedule an appointment right away. Early intervention can help avoid any issues and ensure everything is progressing smoothly, so she can get back to enjoying her favourite meals soon!
