Hi Dr. Toof, I’m a mom of a 15-year-old who just got braces, and I’m a bit anxious about what to expect during the first week of braces. I remember my own experience getting braces as a kid, and it was quite uncomfortable. I want to make sure my son knows what’s coming so he can be prepared and not feel too overwhelmed. Can you please share what typical feelings or challenges he might face, and any tips to make it easier for him during this adjustment period? Thank you!

Hi there! It’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious about your son’s new braces, but you’ve come to the right place! Firstly, your son might experience some discomfort or soreness in the first few days. The braces are doing their job—they’re gently moving the teeth into the correct position. Just like with a new pair of shoes, it takes a little time to get used to them. Encourage him to manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen, and focus on softer foods, like mashed potatoes or yogurt, to ease the initial period.

With braces in place, maintaining good oral hygiene becomes even more vital, but it can also be a bit more challenging. The brackets and wires can easily trap food particles, so there’s a higher chance of cavities and gum issues. Get your son into the habit of rinsing his mouth after meals. Invest in a soft-bristle toothbrush, especially for braces, to ensure he can carefully clean around the edges. Flossing is still crucial—consider getting braces-friendly floss or a floss threader they’ll find easy to use.

It’s also quite common for some kids to develop mouth sores or irritation where the braces rub against the inside of the mouth. Let your son know that this is temporary and quite normal. A quick trip to the orthodontist will usually result in getting dental wax, which can be applied to the brackets to lessen any irritation. If sores do develop, a warm salt water rinse can work wonders for soothing these spots.

Dietary changes are something he’ll need to get used to too. Explain that while some of his favorite foods might be a ‘no-go’ for now, it’s just temporary and for the sake of his braces. Hard, sticky, or crunchy foods can damage the braces, so steering clear of these will avoid potential mishaps. Softer foods will be his best friend during this adjustment phase.

Lastly, remind him about the importance of regular check-ups. These visits keep his treatment on track and help address any issues he might have. Even though some discomfort can follow these appointments, they’re crucial steps toward achieving a beautiful, straight smile. Let him know he should freely discuss any concerns with his orthodontist—it’s part of the whole braces journey!
