Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a mother of two kids, ages 12 and 15, and lately, I’ve been wondering about dentures as my mother is starting to have some dental issues. I want to understand what the process of getting dentures is like, from the initial consultation to fitting and any follow-up care. It seems like an important step for her well-being, and I want to make sure we are fully aware of what to expect. Could you please share some insights on how the whole process works? Thank you so much!

Hi there! Thanks so much for reaching out with your question. I’m doing well, and I hope you and your lovely family are too. It’s great that you’re looking out for your mum’s dental health. Let’s walk through what the process of getting dentures is like, shall we?

The first step in this journey is an initial consultation with the dentist. During this visit, the dentist will assess your mother’s oral health, likely take some X-rays, and have a chat about her specific needs. This is an important step because it helps determine whether dentures are the right choice for her. If she has missing teeth or gum disease, dentures might really help improve her quality of life.

Once the assessment is done, the dentist will put together a personalized treatment plan. If your mum needs any extractions or other dental procedures before getting the dentures, this will be scheduled at this time. I understand this might take some time, but it’s all to ensure her mouth is perfectly ready for the dentures.

When her mouth is ready, the dentist will take impressions of her gums. These impressions help make the dentures fit just right. There might be a few fittings and adjustments along the way to make sure everything is comfortable and looks natural for her.

After she gets her dentures, follow-up visits to the dentist are essential. These allow the dentist to check the fit and make any tweaks needed. They’ll also guide her on how to take care of her new dentures, keeping everything nice and healthy. Encourage your mum to see the dentist sooner rather than later, especially if she’s in any pain. Regular dental visits are key to maintaining oral health and preventing further issues. A healthy mouth can certainly enhance her quality of life!
