Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’ve been having some trouble lately because my gums are swollen, and it’s been quite uncomfortable. I noticed it after I had some spicy food, and now it feels a bit tender when I brush my teeth. I’m worried it might be something serious, but I’m not sure what it means or what I should do about it. Can you please help me understand why my gums might be swollen and what I can do to fix it? Thank you!

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out, and I’m sorry to hear about your gum troubles. Swollen gums can be quite a nuisance, especially when they start acting up after enjoying some spicy food. It’s possible that the spices might have irritated your gums, leading to a bit of inflammation. This is not uncommon, especially if your gums were already a bit sensitive. But don’t worry, we can definitely work through this together!

Another thing to consider is whether you’ve been keeping up with your brushing and flossing routine. Sometimes, if we slack off a bit, plaque can build up along the gumline, which can cause swelling and tenderness. This is one of the early signs of gum disease, but the good news is that it’s usually reversible with good oral hygiene. So, make sure you’re brushing twice a day and flossing regularly to keep those gums healthy.

It’s also worth thinking about whether you’ve tried any new foods or dental products recently. Sometimes, an allergic reaction can cause your gums to swell and feel tender. If you suspect this might be the case, try to pinpoint what’s new in your routine and consider switching it out to see if that helps.

In the meantime, a simple home remedy you can try is rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. This can help reduce the swelling and soothe any discomfort you’re feeling. Just mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. It’s a quick and easy way to get some relief until you can see a dentist.

Speaking of which, it’s really important to schedule a visit with your dentist as soon as you can. They’ll be able to give your gums a thorough check and provide a professional cleaning if needed. Catching these issues early can prevent more serious problems down the line, like infections or even tooth loss.

So, don’t wait too long to get it checked out. Your dental health is worth it!
