Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a father of two teenagers, and my eldest child is considering getting braces to straighten her teeth. However, I’ve heard there can be some risks involved with wearing braces, like discomfort, tooth decay, or issues with speech. I want to make sure we understand everything before making a decision, as I want the best for her. Can you please share what the main risks of wearing braces are? I really appreciate your help! Thank you!

Hello there! Thanks for reaching out, and it’s fantastic that you’re doing your homework before deciding on braces for your daughter. It’s pretty common for the young ones to feel some discomfort, especially right after the braces are put on or adjusted. This happens because the braces are gently moving the teeth into place. To ease this discomfort, you can give your daughter some over-the-counter pain relief medications. Also, encourage her to munch on soft foods, like yogurt or mashed potatoes, especially right after adjustments.

Another thing to keep an eye on is your child’s oral hygiene. Braces can make it a bit tricky to clean teeth properly, which can up the risks for tooth decay and gum problems. Make sure she brushes at least twice a day and uses a fluoride mouthwash. Sometimes, the orthodontist might recommend special tools to help clean around the braces more effectively.

Some kids find that wearing braces changes their speech slightly. It can sound a bit different when the braces go on, but this is usually temporary. Practicing speaking or even singing can help your child’s mouth adjust faster, and it can turn out to be a fun way to build confidence during this adjustment period.

Occasionally, braces can lead to something called root resorption, where the pressure from the braces causes the roots of the teeth to shorten. This isn’t very common but can impact the long-term stability of the teeth. That’s why it’s important to keep up with regular orthodontic check-ups to monitor what’s happening with her teeth and catch any potential issues early.

Lastly, having a good chat with your orthodontist about any worries is key. They’ll be able to assess your daughter’s specific situation and guide you through the process. Timely treatment and professional advice are your best friends in this journey to a healthy and confidant smile.
