Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a parent of a 15-year-old son who has been having some tooth pain lately, and I’ve heard that he might need a root canal treatment. I’m really worried because I keep hearing people say that it can be painful, and I want to know if that’s true for kids his age. I’ve seen him in so much discomfort, and the last thing I want is for him to go through more pain at the dentist. Can you please share your thoughts on whether root canal treatment is painful and what we can expect during the process? Thanks so much for your help!

Hello there! Thanks for reaching out. Let’s take a closer look at what your son might be going through. A root canal is a way to save a tooth that’s in deep trouble, usually because of decay, a knock, or some kind of infection affecting the nerves. While it might sound a bit scary, it’s often the best thing to do to relieve pain and prevent more serious problems later on.

Now, as for the procedure itself, most people find that it’s not as painful as they first thought. Dentists make sure to numb the area really well with local anesthetics, so your son will be quite comfortable during the treatment. In fact, many patients notice that annoying toothache disappearing almost immediately afterwards, which is a big relief!

After the root canal, it’s normal for there to be some mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days. But don’t worry, this can usually be managed easily with some painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen. This little bit of discomfort is just the tooth’s way of healing and should pass quickly.

While you’re waiting for the dentist appointment, there are a few things you can do to help out. A cold compress on the outside of his cheek can ease discomfort, and it’s a good idea to stay away from very hot or cold foods. Encourage your son to keep up with his brushing and flossing too, as good oral hygiene can prevent further irritation. Also, try to steer him clear of hard foods that might make things worse.

Most importantly, make sure to visit the dentist when you can. Putting it off might lead to more pain, a bigger infection, and in the worst cases, even the loss of the tooth. By getting in there sooner, you’ll not only help your son feel better but also protect his dental health in the long run. Take care!
