Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I recently got new dentures and I’m a bit concerned about how long it usually takes to get used to them. I’m a 45-year-old father of two, and I’ve noticed it’s quite different from my natural teeth, especially when it comes to eating and speaking. I’m eager to know how long it might take for me to adjust, as I’ve heard it can take some time for people to feel comfortable with their new dentures. I want to ensure that I can enjoy meals with my family and not feel self-conscious while speaking. Any advice you could provide would be really appreciated! Thank you!

Hello there! Thank you for reaching out and congratulations on taking the step towards new dentures. It’s completely normal to have these concerns, and I’m here to help ease this transition for you. Adjusting to new dentures can indeed take some time, usually around 2 to 4 weeks for most people. During this initial period, it’s normal to experience some soreness, a bit of difficulty with eating, and even some changes in how you speak. This is just your mouth getting used to the new shape and materials.

The discomfort you’re feeling is quite common. The fit and support that dentures provide are quite different from natural teeth, which can create a feeling of fullness in your mouth. Sometimes, if the dentures aren’t perfectly aligned, they might rub against your gums, causing irritation. But don’t worry, this is something that can usually be adjusted.

To help make this transition smoother, a gentle start is best. Try sticking to softer foods like mashed potatoes or soups to begin with and slowly introduce firmer foods as you grow more comfortable. This practice not only eases soreness but also helps your mouth adjust at a comfortable pace. Remember to ensure your dentures are always clean and properly fitted to keep discomfort at bay.

An additional tip for you is using a dental adhesive. This can help secure your dentures in place, minimizing movement and any discomfort that comes with it. It might make eating and speaking a bit easier during this adjustment period. Think of it as a little extra support while you’re getting used to your new set.

Finally, if you still feel discomfort after a couple of weeks, or if you notice persistent pain or sores, make sure to visit your dentist. They’ll be able to make any necessary adjustments so your dentures fit perfectly, letting you enjoy meals and conversations with your family with full confidence. Keep those dental appointments regular, and you’ll be back to enjoying your favorite family gatherings in no time!
