Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 45-year-old father, and I recently got dentures after struggling with missing teeth for a while. I wanted to ask you, how long does it usually take to get used to dentures? I’ve been experiencing some discomfort and it’s making me a bit worried, especially since I need to care for my kids aged 12 and 15. I want to be able to eat and speak normally again without any trouble. Your advice would be really helpful for me and possibly for others who might be in the same boat. Thanks!

Hi there, and thanks for reaching out! Getting used to new dentures is a common concern, so you’re definitely not alone in this, especially when you have kids to look out for. Generally, it takes about 2 to 4 weeks for most people to adjust to their new dentures. However, don’t worry if it takes a bit longer—everyone’s mouth is unique, and some need a little more time to adapt.

Discomfort is pretty normal at the beginning, and it’s often due to your mouth getting used to the new shape of the dentures. You might experience sore spots on your gums or feel a bit of muscle fatigue, especially if certain muscles weren’t used as much before. It can feel strange at first, but this should improve over time.

In the meantime, to ease some of the discomfort, you can try switching to softer foods that are easier to chew. Using a denture adhesive can also provide extra stability, helping your dentures stay in place better. Moreover, rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can soothe any sore areas, offering you some relief.

If discomfort persists or becomes severe beyond the typical adjustment period, it’s important to visit your dentist. They can examine your dentures and check for any fit issues that might need tweaking. Regular follow-ups ensure that your dentures fit well and function properly, making eating and speaking much easier.

Remember to see your dentist as soon as possible if issues continue. They can make necessary adjustments to ensure you’re comfortable, allowing you to get back to your routine with your kids. Taking care of your dental health, especially with dentures, is crucial, and getting the right help early on really makes a difference! Best of luck, and I hope you and your kids enjoy mealtimes again soon.
