Hi Dr. Toof, I’m a mother of a 12-year-old boy who gets really scared whenever we need to visit the dentist. I’ve tried explaining that it’s important for his teeth and overall health, but he just gets nervous and refuses to go. I want to help him feel more comfortable and relaxed about dental visits, as I remember being scared of the dentist when I was young too. Do you have any tips or strategies on how I can help my child stop being scared of the dentist? It would be really helpful to hear your advice on dealing with dental anxiety in kids. Thanks so much!

Hi there! I totally understand where you and your son are coming from. It’s not uncommon for kids to feel scared about going to the dentist. A lot of this fear stems from the unknown – and sometimes it might be because of a previous experience that wasn’t too comfortable or maybe those dental tools just look a bit too much like instruments from an alien spaceship! It’s perfectly normal for kids to feel this way, and I think it’s great that you want to help ease his fears.

One effective way to promote a more positive attitude towards dental visits is through positive reinforcement. You can try rewarding your son for being brave at the dentist. Maybe promise him a small treat afterward, like a teeth-friendly favorite snack or a trip to the zoo or park. These rewards can help him associate dentist visits with something fun or enjoyable, making the next visit less daunting.

Before the actual day of the appointment, it’s really helpful to prepare your son by talking about what he can expect in simple terms. Reading children’s books about friendly dentist trips or watching some cartoons where characters visit the dentist can make it feel less intimidating. The storyline where the character ends up having a good time could reassure him that everything will be okay.

Relaxation techniques can also do wonders! Simple breathing exercises or visualizing a happy place, like a sunny beach, can help calm his nerves. While waiting for his turn at the clinic, guiding him through these exercises might distract him from his anxiety, letting him feel more in control.

However, if his fear continues to be quite strong despite your efforts, I’d suggest seeing a pediatric dentist. They are specially trained to work with anxious children and often have a very gentle approach in a kid-friendly environment. This can make a world of difference in helping your son feel secure and comfortable. Just remember not to delay these visits, as untreated dental issues can lead to bigger problems down the road. Hope these tips help, and let’s get your son smiling all the way to the dentist!
