Hi Dr. Athirah, I hope you’re doing well! I recently got dental veneers and I’m curious if there are any food restrictions I should be aware of. I’m in my 30s, and I’ve heard mixed opinions from friends who have had similar procedures. I love enjoying local foods like our delicious roti canai and durian, so I want to make sure I take care of my veneers while still enjoying my meals. Could you please let me know if there are specific foods I should avoid? Thank you so much!

Hello there! Thanks for reaching out, and congrats on your new veneers. They’re a fantastic way to brighten up your smile, but yes, there are some things to consider while enjoying your meals. Let’s go through it together.

Firstly, dental veneers are these wonderful thin shells placed over your teeth to make them look amazing. But, just like anything we love, they need a bit of TLC to keep them in good shape. Veneers can chip or get damaged if we’re not careful, so knowing what to eat and what to avoid is pretty important.

Now, about the foods. It’s best to steer clear of hard foods like nuts, hard candies, and even ice. Biting down on these can chip your veneers, which is something we’d definitely like to avoid. Sticky foods are another one to watch out for. So, things like toffee or chewing gum might pull on the edges of your veneers and loosen them. As for our beloved roti canai, you’re good to enjoy it. Just be gentle, especially if it’s a bit on the tougher side or crispy!

Something else to keep in mind is the staining foods. Even though veneers are pretty resistant to staining, over time, dark-colored foods like coffee, red wine, and soy sauce can leave a mark. Easy fix though – just rinse your mouth with water after enjoying these foods. Keeps everything fresh!

Lastly, don’t forget about regular visits to your dentist. Check-ups are crucial to ensure everything’s in tip-top condition. Your dentist can give your veneers a professional clean and make sure they’re still doing their best for your smile. So do make that appointment, and keep flashing those pearly whites!
