How Do I Know If My Wisdom Tooth Is Infected?

Hi Dr. Toof, I’m a parent in my 40s and recently my 15-year-old son has been complaining about pain at the back of his mouth, which makes me wonder if his wisdom tooth might be infected. I know he’s at the age when these teeth usually come in, and I’m concerned about the swelling and sensitivity he’s experiencing. I’ve heard that signs of an infected wisdom tooth can include bad breath and persistent pain, but I’m not sure what to look for as a parent. Could you please help me understand how to tell if his wisdom tooth is infected and what steps we should take? Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out with your concerns, and it’s great that you’re keeping a watchful eye on your son’s dental health. When it comes to wisdom teeth, knowing the signs of a possible infection is crucial. If your son is dealing with severe pain at the back of his mouth, swelling around his gum line, persistent bad breath, and maybe even fever, these could be red flags. Difficulty opening his mouth is another sign that things might not be right down there.

Now, let’s talk about why this might be happening. Sometimes, wisdom teeth don’t have enough space to come out properly due to a lack of space in the jaw. This can cause the tooth to grow at an awkward angle, which we call an impaction. Other times, if the tooth is only partially out, bacteria can build up around those hard-to-clean areas, leading to inflammation and infection.

For some immediate relief, have your son rinse his mouth with some warm salt water – it’s a simple but effective way to reduce swelling and pain. Paracetamol, the good old reliable over-the-counter painkiller, can also help him feel a bit better. But, remember, these are just temporary measures. It’s really important that he doesn’t ignore these symptoms and you both keep an eye on them.

Getting a dentist involved is very important. They’ll likely do an examination and maybe even take an X-ray to see what’s going on. Depending on their findings, the dentist might suggest treatments like removing the tooth or prescribing antibiotics to sort out an infection. It’s always better to address these things sooner rather than later.

In our Malaysian culture, we often look to traditional remedies, which can be comforting, but it’s essential to balance this with professional dental care when it concerns issues like infections. Encourage your son to talk openly about his dental health and emphasize the importance of regular dental visits. This will help prevent bigger issues down the road and ensure that his teeth stay healthy and strong.
