Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a mom in my late 40s, and I’ve been looking into dentures because my elderly father has been struggling with his teeth lately. I keep hearing about full dentures and partial dentures, but I’m a bit confused about the difference between them. I want to understand which option might be better for him, especially considering how it might affect his eating and comfort. Any insights you could share would really help me out, and I believe it would also benefit others who are wondering the same thing. Thanks so much!

Hi there! Thanks so much for your question. Dentures can indeed be a bit confusing at first, but let me break it down for you in a simple way. Full dentures are designed to replace all the teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, basically when there are no natural teeth left in that arch. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used when some natural teeth are still present. They kind of bridge the gaps without the need to remove existing teeth.

There are several reasons why someone might need dentures, most commonly due to tooth loss from decay, gum disease, or injury. These issues often happen due to poor oral hygiene, but sometimes, they can be due to inherited dental conditions. For the elderly, such concerns are more prevalent, so it’s great that you’re looking into options for your father.

When it comes to eating and comfort, full dentures can sometimes feel big and take a bit of time to get used to. They might affect chewing or how one talks initially. Partial dentures are usually more comfortable since they don’t cover the entire set of gums but keep in mind both types need time to adjust to.

While your father is waiting to see a dentist, keeping up with good oral hygiene is key. Make sure to clean any remaining natural teeth and the dentures regularly. If he’s already wearing dentures, a good denture adhesive can help keep them in place and make them more comfortable to wear.

However, the most important step is to see a dentist soon. A dentist will assess his oral condition, help choose the most suitable type of dentures, and ensure they fit well. Properly fitted dentures can make a big difference in comfort and how well he can eat, so don’t delay in making that appointment!
