Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 45-year-old father, and I’ve noticed that my teeth have been feeling more sensitive and some are starting to look a bit rough around the edges. With my kids aged 12 and 15, I want to set a good example for them when it comes to oral health. I’ve heard a lot about dentures but I’m not really sure how to tell if I actually need them. Could you please share some signs to look out for? I really want to understand if dentures are something I should consider soon. Thanks so much!

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out, and hope you’re doing well too. It’s fantastic that you want to set a great example for your kids when it comes to oral health; that’s really commendable. Let’s talk about whether dentures might be something you should consider. If you’re noticing increased tooth sensitivity or if your teeth are looking a bit discolored, rough around the edges, or even loose and cracking, these are signs that could suggest your oral health needs attention. It’s your body’s way of telling you something’s up with your teeth.

The causes behind these issues can vary. Gum disease and tooth decay are common culprits, and sometimes it’s just age-related wear and tear. Over the years, especially if there’s been some dental neglect in the past, teeth can weaken. It’s nothing unusual, but it sure is important to keep an eye on what’s happening inside your mouth.

In the meantime, while you’re waiting to see a dentist, make sure you’re brushing gently twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and don’t forget to floss daily. It helps to use a warm saltwater rinse since it can soothe sensitive areas and prevent infections. Stay away from harsh mouthwashes as they might irritate your teeth even more.

Most importantly, let’s get you to a dentist as soon as possible! They’ll be able to assess what’s going on and discuss the best treatment options for you, whether it’s dentures, crowns, or bridges. Having professional advice is key to figuring out the right path forward for your oral health.

Lastly, remember that by taking care of your teeth and making those dental visits a priority, you’re setting a brilliant example for your kids. It shows them how important it is to look after their teeth, making it more likely they’ll develop good habits themselves. Keep up the good work; it benefits everyone!
