Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 45-year-old father and I’ve recently started wearing dentures, but I keep getting sore spots in my mouth after only a short time of wearing them. It’s becoming quite uncomfortable, and I’m worried that it might affect my ability to eat or even enjoy family meals with my kids, who are 13 and 15. I really want to understand why my dentures are causing these sore spots and what I can do to fix it. Any advice for someone going through this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry to hear you’re having a tough time with your new dentures. It’s quite common for folks to experience sore spots, especially when you first start wearing them. Basically, these sore spots often happen because the dentures might not be sitting perfectly in your mouth. If they’re even a little off, they can rub against your gums and cause some unhappy irritation. And when they’re brand new, your mouth just needs a bit of time to adjust too.

Now, the best way to tackle this problem is to pop by your dentist’s office. They’re pros at figuring out if your dentures need a little tweak or adjustment. If the sore spots are really getting to you, they might give you some gel or a mouth rinse that can help calm things down. Your dentist will make sure those dentures fit just right, which should stop the rubbing and allow your mouth some rest.

In the meantime, let’s talk about what you can do for some quick relief. You can try using some over-the-counter pain relief gel made for oral discomfort. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can also help soothe any irritation and keep things clean. Plus, it’s a good idea to avoid really hard or crunchy foods for a bit as they could make the sore spots feel worse.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to see your dentist soon. If you leave those sore areas without proper attention, they could get worse or even lead to an infection. Your dentist will ensure your dentures not only fit but also allow you to munch away on all those delicious family meals without any pain.

You know how central food and family are to us here in Malaysia, right? Ensuring your dentures are comfortable helps you not miss out on those treasured times with your family over a good meal. Don’t let a bit of soreness spoil your chance to enjoy meals and laughter with your kids!
