Why Do Dentures Feel Loose Over Time?

Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a mother in my 40s, and I have been noticing that my dentures feel quite loose lately, which makes it hard for me to eat and speak comfortably. I’ve had them for a few years now, and I’m a bit worried about why this is happening and if it’s normal. Is it common for dentures to loosen over time? I want to make sure I’m taking good care of them, especially since my kids are aged 12 and 15, and I want to set a good example for them when it comes to dental health. Would appreciate your advice on this! Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out and sharing your concern with us. It’s totally normal to worry when your dentures feel loose, but rest assured, you’re definitely not alone. Many denture wearers experience changes in how their dentures fit over time. This usually happens because the shape of your mouth can change due to bone loss in the jaw, gum shrinkage, and even changes in your weight. These factors can all contribute to that loose feeling you’re experiencing.

In the short term, there are a few things you can do while waiting to see your dentist. Denture adhesives can be a good temporary fix to help keep them snug. Plus, cleaning your dentures and gums regularly can also improve the fit and keep everything nice and hygienic.

For a more permanent solution, it’s best to have a chat with your dentist. They’ll be able to check how your dentures are fitting and may suggest a relining or adjustment. In some cases, if your mouth’s shape has changed a lot, they might recommend getting a new pair altogether.

It’s really important to see your dentist as soon as you can. Wearing loose dentures for too long can lead to issues like mouth irritation and sores, and might even make eating properly difficult. Good nutrition is crucial for overall health, so taking care of this sooner rather than later is really beneficial.

And by taking prompt action to address these dental concerns, you’re setting a great example for your kids about the importance of looking after their health. Teaching them to prioritize dental visits and oral hygiene is a wonderful habit they can carry with them throughout their lives. You’ve got this!
