Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a father of two teenagers, and I’ve been worried because my 15-year-old son recently had a small cavity. I’ve heard people say that sometimes cavities can heal on their own without needing a filling, and I’m curious if that’s true. I want to make sure he has the best dental health without unnecessary procedures, especially since he’s not fond of dental visits. Could you please share your thoughts on whether a cavity can actually heal naturally? Thank you!

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out with your question. I completely understand wanting the best for your son while also trying to avoid unnecessary dental visits—teenagers and dental clinics aren’t always best friends! Let’s dive into some information that can help you with your concern.

Cavities, as we commonly call them, are little troublemakers caused by bacteria partying on sugars and producing acids that eat away at the tooth’s enamel. If a cavity is caught when it’s just starting, it might be possible to stop it from getting worse. This is because our teeth have this amazing ability to repair themselves to an extent using minerals from our saliva and fluoride, kind of like a natural defense system. However, this is mostly true only for very early-stage damage.

Once a cavity has moved beyond the enamel and made itself comfortable, it’s a different story. At this stage, the body can’t fix it on its own. In these cases, the only way forward is usually to get a filling from your dentist. This prevents the cavity from digging deeper and causing more problems, like pain or, worse, tooth loss. Ignoring it isn’t a good choice because this could lead to bigger dental issues down the line.

Meanwhile, there are still things you can help your son do at home to slow the cavity’s progress if it’s small. Make sure he brushes his teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flosses regularly, and tries to cut down on those sweet treats that the bacteria love. But do keep in mind, home remedies some might suggest, like mouth rinses or using baking soda, aren’t real substitutes for visiting a dentist.

So, my best advice is to book an appointment with a dentist as soon as you can. Even if it’s just a simple check-up, catching things early makes it easier for everyone. This way, your son can avoid more serious issues and maintain a healthy smile for years to come!
