Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a mother of a 15-year-old who just got braces a few months ago. Recently, we noticed that one of the braces wires came loose, and I’m a bit worried about what we should do next. Should we try to fix it ourselves, or is it better to come in for a visit? I’ve heard that a loose wire can cause discomfort and might affect his treatment, and I want to make sure he’s comfortable and everything stays on track. Your advice would really help us during this tricky time! Thank you!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out, and don’t worry, you’re not alone in dealing with this. Braces wires can sometimes come loose, and it usually happens due to reasons like eating hard or sticky foods, little accidental bumps, or just normal wear and tear over time. Braces are delicate, so it’s good to be mindful of these everyday activities!

If the wire is just slightly out of place and not causing any pain, you can try using a pair of tweezers to gently push it back where it belongs. If the wire is poking out and causing discomfort, orthodontic wax is a lifesaver! Just place a small piece over the sharp end to keep your child comfortable until you can see the dentist.

When you visit the orthodontist, they’ll be able to either move the wire back into place or replace it entirely if that’s needed. This way, your child’s orthodontic treatment stays on track, and any discomfort is dealt with promptly. It’s really important to address these issues quickly to avoid further delays or problems.

In terms of preventing this from happening again, it’s helpful to remind your kiddo to avoid crunchy, sticky snacks. Those can be pretty tempting but might cause these kinds of issues. Also, if they play any sports or engage in activities where braces could get knocked, a mouthguard could be a game-changer.

And yes, definitely make that appointment with the orthodontist. Even if the wire isn’t causing immediate pain, seeing a professional ensures everything’s working as it should and keeps your child’s treatment on track effortlessly. Orthodontists are there to provide the best care and make sure your child’s smile stays on the right path!
