Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m a parent of a 12-year-old who just got braces, and I’ve noticed that they sometimes complain about pain after their adjustments. I’m curious about why braces hurt sometimes, especially since they don’t seem to mind it too much at first but then say it feels sore later on. I want to make sure I understand what to expect and how I can help them through the discomfort. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello there! Thanks for reaching out and being such a caring parent. When your child gets braces or goes in for adjustments, it’s pretty normal for them to feel some soreness afterwards. This happens because the braces are doing their job—moving the teeth into new positions. This shifting creates pressure, which can make their gums and teeth feel a bit sore.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the surfaces of the braces can rub against the inside of the mouth, causing some irritation or soreness—especially during those first few days after getting adjusted. It’s kind of like breaking in a new pair of shoes; it might be uncomfortable until they get used to it.

Now, what can we do about it? Thankfully, there are ways to manage these aches. Dentists can help check if the braces are fitting well and even give you some special dental wax. This wax covers any brackets that might be poking or scratching their cheeks and lips.

While you’re at home, some handy tips include having your child eat soft foods like porridge or bananas, and have them rinse with warm salty water to calm their gums. Over-the-counter pain relief can also help ease any persistent discomfort.

Remember, if the soreness doesn’t settle down, it’s a good idea to visit the dentist. They’ll make sure everything is on the right track, and there are no underlying issues. This way, your child’s brace journey can be as smooth as possible!
