FAQ

What is wisdom tooth extraction and why is it needed?

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common oral surgery procedure to remove one or more permanent adult teeth located at the back of your mouth (third molars). In many cases, these teeth become impacted (trapped below the gum line) or grow at an angle, leading to pain, swelling, and infection.

Removing them prevents damage to adjacent teeth and maintains overall oral hygiene. At Klinik Pergigian Dr Toof in Kajang, we assess your X-rays to determine if removal is vital for your long-term dental health.

Does wisdom tooth extraction hurt?

This is the most common concern we hear! The short answer is no. The procedure itself is virtually painless. We use potent local anesthesia to completely numb the area before we begin. You may feel some pressure during the extraction, but you will not feel sharp pain.

For anxious patients, we can discuss additional sedation options and anxiety management like soothing aroma therapy and soothing music on noise cancelling headphones. Post-procedure soreness is normal, but we provide a comprehensive pain management plan and medication to ensure you stay comfortable once the numbness wears off.

How long is the recovery after wisdom tooth extraction?

Most patients recover enough to return to light activities within 3 to 5 days. However, full tissue healing can take up to 2 weeks. It is normal to experience some swelling for the first 48 hours.

For surgical extractions (especially for impacted wisdom teeth), we typically provide Medical Leave (MC) depending on the complexity of the surgery, allowing you the necessary time to rest and recover without work or study stress.

What should I eat after wisdom tooth extraction?

For the first 24 to 48 hours, stick to a soft, cool diet. Great options include yogurt, ice cream, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and cooled porridge (bubur). As you heal, you can gradually introduce semi-soft foods like scrambled eggs and pasta.

Important Tip: Do not use a drinking straw for the first few days, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful condition called “dry socket.” Also, avoid spicy (pedas) foods and crunchy snacks until fully healed.
