Hi Dr. Athirah, I’m currently using dentures and I’ve been thinking about the possibility of upgrading to dental implants. I’m in my late 40s, and while the dentures worked for me at first, I’ve been facing some discomfort and issues with eating lately. I would really like to know if I’m a suitable candidate for implants and how the process works. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated, as I want to make the best decision for my dental health moving forward. Thanks!

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out to us with your question. It’s great that you’re considering your options for better dental health. The first step in deciding whether implants are right for you is to consult with your dentist. They’ll need to check if your oral health and bone structure can handle the implants. Often, when teeth are missing, bone loss can happen, which might mean you’ll need a bone graft before getting implants.

Dental implants offer a lot of benefits over traditional dentures. They’re stable, comfortable, and function much like your natural teeth. This means you can enjoy your meals without the usual troubles dentures might cause. You’ll get back the bite strength you’re missing, making eating a more pleasant experience.

The process of getting implants involves placing a titanium post into your jawbone. This post acts like the root of a natural tooth. After some time to heal, usually a few months, a dental crown is fitted on top. While it might take a bit longer to complete, many find the long-term benefits are worth it.

If your dentures are uncomfortable and making eating difficult, it’s really important to discuss these issues with your dentist. They might adjust your dentures or suggest preliminary tests to check your jawbone’s readiness for implants. This helps in making an informed decision.

Lastly, don’t wait too long to speak with your dentist about this. Early consultations can make the transition to implants smoother and are key to better dental health. Your dentist can guide you on whether implants are the right move for you and help you plan the next steps comfortably.
