Hi Dr. Toof, I hope you’re doing well! I’m in my late 30s and have recently got veneers to improve my smile, which I love. However, I’m a bit worried about what happens if one of my veneers chips. I’ve heard some stories from friends who had issues, and I want to make sure I take good care of them. What should I do if that happens, and will it be a big problem? I appreciate any advice you can share, as I want to keep my smile looking great! Thanks a lot!

Hello there! I’m glad to hear you’re loving your new smile. Veneers can do wonders for our confidence, can’t they? But yes, like anything else, they need a little care and attention. A chipped veneer can happen for a few reasons. Maybe you crunched on something hard like ice or a bone, met with a little accident, or sometimes, it could just be from grinding your teeth at night. While veneers are quite strong, they aren’t invincible. So, it’s always good to be mindful of what you bite into.

First things first, if you do notice a chip, don’t panic! Take a deep breath and assess the damage. If it’s just a tiny chip and you’re not feeling any pain, you might just need to be a bit careful with what you eat until you can see your dentist. But if it feels larger or you’re experiencing any discomfort, consulting your dentist would be the best move.

Now, the good news is chipped veneers can usually be fixed. Your dentist might repair it with a special dental material, or if the chip is too big, they might suggest replacing the whole veneer. It all depends on the situation, and your dentist will guide you on the best course of action.

To avoid more chips in the future, try to skip biting into really hard things like ice or tough fruits. If you grind your teeth at night, it might be a good idea to wear a mouthguard while you sleep. These little habits can go a long way in keeping your veneers in great shape, and your smile looking fabulous.

Finally, don’t delay a visit to the dentist if you spot any chips or feel uneasy. Early action can save you both time and money, and ensure your smile stays healthy and bright. Plus, your dentist can always give you personalized advice that’s perfect just for you! So, stay smiling and all the best in maintaining that wonderful new grin!
