Hi Dr. Athirah, I hope you’re doing well! I’m curious about how dental implants are installed because I’ve been thinking about getting one. I’m in my 40s and have been dealing with missing teeth for a while now, which really affects my confidence when I smile. I’ve heard a lot about dental implants as a solution, but I’m a bit anxious about the whole process. Could you please explain how the installation works, and what I should expect? Thanks so much!

Hello there! Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. It’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious about dental procedures, especially when it involves something like dental implants. Let’s break down the process to make it easier to understand and help ease some of your worries.

Dental implants are essentially like artificial tooth roots that are placed into your jawbone. Everything kicks off with a consultation where your dentist will check out your oral health and the condition of your jawbone. In some cases, if the bone isn’t strong enough, you might need a little extra help, like a bone graft, to get things up to par.

The actual installation is considered a minor surgical procedure where the dentist places the implant right into your jaw. Don’t worry; you’ll receive local anesthesia to make sure it’s as comfortable as possible. It can take a few months for the implant to fuse with your bone, a process called osseointegration, but it’s a crucial step for a sturdy, lasting result.

While you’re waiting for everything to heal, you typically get a temporary crown to cover the implant. This means you won’t have to feel self-conscious, as it maintains both your smile and your confidence. Once healing is complete, a custom crown that matches your other teeth is attached to the implant, bringing back both functionality and aesthetics.

It’s really important to continue with good oral hygiene once your implant is set. Make sure to brush and floss regularly, and stick to your dentist’s advice to prevent any issues. If missing teeth have been affecting you, definitely make an appointment with a dental professional. They’ll guide you every step of the way and address any concerns you might have. Early checks and intervention can make a world of difference, so don’t put it off any longer!
